Portrait of the late U.S. Marine Corps Casimir Joseph Cichon, taken during his service as a Corporal around World War II. Cichon, who was later promoted to Sergeant, collected and preserved artifacts during and after the Battle of Okinawa. As a gesture of goodwill and a commitment to strengthening partnerships, Cichon’s son, U.S. Air National Guard Lt. Col. Patrick Cichon, Commander of the 129th Medical Group, Emergency Medicine Physician, and Flight Surgeon, returned these and other artifacts to the Japanese people during Military Facility Annual Training at U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa. Additional artifacts were also given to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and the Gunma Prefectural Museum of History in mainland Japan. (Image courtesy of the Cichon family.)
