U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Steven Macveigh, the battalion master gunner assigned to Headquarters, and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 201st Field Artillery Regiment with the West Virginia Army National Guard stands outside his operations cell as part of a training exercise at Camp Grayling in Grayling, Michigan during Exercise Northern Strike 2024. The battalion master gunner is responsible for the oversight of the entire battalion’s howitzer gun training. He is in charge of ensuring each gun crew is conducting proper and safe training in accordance with Army doctrine and training protocols, and correcting any deficiencies he finds. Exercise Northern Strike is an Army sponsored, multi-component, multinational training event conducted twice a year at the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center. Northern Strike focuses on offense, defense and stability operations, while simultaneously focusing on maintaining unit readiness alongside joint and partner forces in all-domains of warfare. Northern Strike is Michigan’s largest and longest standing joint readiness exercise, and this iteration hosts over 6,000 participants and is being held from August 3 to 17, 2024 at the National All Domain Warfighting Center.
