Sgt. Nicholas Barnum, native of Fort Worth, Texas, and squad leader for 2nd squad, 2nd platoon, 401st Military Police Company "Gunfighters" hands off a rifle to his team leader, Sgt. Erika Lowe, after completing the precombat checks on the weapon. Precombat inspections are tools leaders use to make sure their Soldiers have the proper equipment before going out on a mission. The squad deployed from Fort Hood, Texas, has been training and building the Iraqi police force in Baghdad since arriving in Iraq a year ago.
