Kristen Maxwell, a junior high student in Mahopac, New York, runs her first long-distance race as part of a fundraiser Sept. 7, 2013. Maxwell, now a first lieutenant and platoon leader assigned to the 71st Chemical Company, 303rd Ordnance Battalion (EOD), 8th Military Police Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, competes in numerous fitness challenges. For the past two years, she’s focused primarily on long-distance running and will be representing the U.S. Army Hawaii in the upcoming Army 10-Miler in Washington, D.C., in October.
