U.S. Marine Corps Col. Kyle Shoop (left), the commanding officer of Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, speaks with Lt. Col. Matthew Gaede, the commanding officer of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 312, MAG 31, 2nd MAW, after the latter’s arrival to Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan, Sept. 10, 2024. VMFA-312 arrived at MCAS Iwakuni as part of the Unit Deployment Program to augment MAG-12, 1st MAW. The UDP enables squadrons throughout the Marine Corps to exercise expeditionary capabilities while providing a forward presence in the Indo-Pacific. Shoop is a native of Illinois.
