Jim Kunkle, World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, writes a note on a sheet metal piece thanking maintainers, Sept. 21, 2024, during the Central Coast AirFest at the Santa Maria Airport in Santa Maria, California. The 155th Air Refueling Wing's KC-135 had heritage paint scheme honoring Kunkle, replicating the P-38 he flew in WWII. Kunkle served as a fighter pilot during WWII and flew P-38 and P-57 aircraft.
