Naval Support Activity South Potomac (NSASP) conducted a force protection drill Feb. 20 as part of the Navy's annual Citadel Shield exercise. The training scenario was a challenging one: first responders had to deal with an active shooter, hostages and multiple casualties. The role-playing hostage taker (l.) taunts police while holding a hostage at gunpoint. The "bad guy" for the exercise was a veteran Sailor with a high-level of tactical expertise. While NSASP police officers contained and eventually eliminated the gunman, firefighters and EMTs treated and evacuated the wounded. As part of a mutual aid agreement with neighboring counties, the base received assistance from emergency responders from King George and Westmorland counties in Virginia, and from Charles County in Maryland.
