A memorial to the original eighteen horses that established the Horse Cavalry Detachment, 1st Cavalry Division in 1972 sits atop the detachment commander's office at Fort Cavazos, Texas, Oct. 24, 2024. A plaque displaying “DVM, WELLS” is affectionately placed just above the door, crafted by the soldiers who serve under her. Her commitment to her soldiers and the military working horse bolsters the legacy and tradition that was trail-blazed by the officers before her. (U.S. Army Reserve Photo by Sgt. Tyler M. Matz)
