As part of their American Women Quarters Series, the United States Mint recently released a quarter bearing the likeness of Zitkala-Ša who was one of the most important American Indian activists and writers of the 20th century. During the ceremony, hosted by Arlington National Cemetery and the United States Mint, Zitkala-Ša’s family members and friends were given the opportunity to place the quarter bearing her likeness on her headstone. Placing coins on headstones has long been a military tradition of remembrance. This ceremony was also held during National Native American Heritage Month.
