Arlington National Cemetery Command Historian Dr. Steven Carney speaks during a remembrance ceremony for Zitkala-Ša at her gravesite in Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, Nov. 6, 2024. As part of their American Women Quarters Series, the United States Mint recently released a quarter bearing the likeness of Zitkala-Ša who was one of the most important American Indian activists and writers of the 20th century. During the ceremony, Zitkala-Ša’s family members and friends were given the opportunity to place the quarter bearing her likeness on her headstone. Placing coins on headstones has long been a military tradition of remembrance. This ceremony was also held during National Native American Heritage Month.
