A rosette sits in place next to the name of Lt. Jack C. Rittichier, a Coast Guard pilot who went missing in the Vietnam War, during the National POW/MIA Recognition Day Ceremony hosted by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Sept. 20, 2024. Rittichier and his crew members went missing after their HH-3E “Jolly Green Giant” helicopter was shot down in Lao, Vietnam, during an attempt to rescue a downed Marine pilot. National POW/MIA Recognition Day is held on the third Friday of September each year to honor the commitment and sacrifices made by this nation's prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action, as well as their families.
