A Connecticut Army National Guard soldier from the 192nd Military Police Battalion holds a replica Wampum beadwork during the 192nd’s National Native American Heritage Month observance at Camp Nett, Niantic, Connecticut, Nov. 2, 2024. Wampum was traditionally used for jewelry, as trade goods and in medicine. Members of the Mohegan Tribe believed that part of the soul was infused into the beadwork during its creation and thus a healthy person giving a gift of Wampum to a sick person would aid in their recovery.
