Standing ground water and open sewage in Husseiniya, Iraq pose serious health hazards to the people who live there. The Husseiniya Working Group Charter was signed into effect August 1, 2005 to improve and develop essential services such as drinking water, storm-drainage, and waste treatment facilities in Husseiniya Iraq. Husseiniya is a settlement that took root in the agricultural region north of Baghdad in the 1980s and the previous regime never extended basic public services to the area. The population of Husseiniya steadily increased to nearly 750,000 residents as more and more people moved to the town with their families. This large influx of people from the towns surrounding Baghdad created a public works crisis situation that continues to this day.
