From top, U.S. Navy Cmdr. Michael “Squintz” Procelli executes a carrier break over the runway at Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu as he and U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Tristan “Troll” Gerritsen and U.S. Navy Lt. Andrew “CP” Preul return from a training mission during Gray Flag on September 20, 2024. The flight was a major milestone for Procelli, who logged his 1,000th hour flying the F-35C Lightning II. He and Preul are both assigned to the Edwards Air Force Base detachment of Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) Nine, while Gerritsen was a guest pilot from the U.S. Air Force’s 461st Flight Test Squadron, also based at Edwards. Gray Flag is an annual large-force test event that brings the joint force together to test and evaluate multi-domain systems in a maritime environment, ensuring our nation’s warfighters are equipped with effective, interoperable systems that will help them deter aggression, protect our nation’s prosperity and security, and return home safely to their families.
