The 39th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Eric M. Smith, and Lt. Gen. Dimitri Henry, the Director of Intelligence for the Joint Chief of Staff, hand a slice of cake to Lance Cpl. Stephanie VillegasAlberto, an administrative specialist with Headquarters Marine Corps, during the Pentagon Marine Corps 249th Birthday Cake Cutting Ceremony in Washington, DC on Nov. 7, 2024. VillegasAlberto acted as the youngest Marine during the ceremony. It is tradition for the oldest Marine in attendance pass one of the first slices of cake to the youngest Marine, symbolizing the passing of wisdom, knowledge and experience as well as trust and confidence in those who will carry on the Marine Corps traditions in the future. Each year, Marines celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps to build camaraderie across generations of Marines. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Staff Sgt. Kelsey Dornfeld)
