U.S. Army Staff Staff Sgt. James Wyatt Rutledge, an infantryman assigned to 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division, and a member of the Navajo tribe (Diné Nation), proudly keeps his family legacies alive. The descendant of a Navajo code talker, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to fulfill a dying wish to his grandfather, who was also a veteran.
His grandmother, a survivor of the American Indian boarding schools, and who now chooses to only speak Navajo, inspired him to carry on cultural traditions with his own children. “I make sure they recognize who they are," said Rutledge.
