U.S. Marine Corps Col. Jason S. D. Perry, senior Marine Corps representative at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), passes a slice of the ceremonial birthday cake to Capt. Edward Cavallini (ret.), the oldest Marine in attendance, during the 249th Marine Corps Birthday Ball ceremony held at the historic Hotel Del Monte, Monterey, California, November 15, 2024. Cavallini is 101 years old and served as an infantry platoon commander during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945, where he was twice wounded. NPS is located in Monterey, California, provides defense-focused graduate education, including classified studies and interdisciplinary research, to advance the operational effectiveness, technological leadership, and warfighting advantage of the Naval service. Established in 1909, NPS offers master’s and doctorate programs to Department of Defense military and civilians, along with international partners, to deliver transformative solutions and innovative leaders through advanced education and research.
