Construction crews were hard at work Dec. 9, 2024, retrofitting a former mental health facility at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The $54.6 million seismic retrofit project at Building 8, a four-story building that has served Bay Area veterans since 1932, is being managed by SFVAMC and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers San Francisco District. Earlier this month, crews placed roughly nine yards of concrete filling the slabs of the building’s two central elevators. The concrete was tested and sampled by quality assurance specialists directly off the truck prior to placement. The pour was in addition to the more than 220 yards of concrete that have already been placed along the building’s southside foundation.
