Surangel, daughter of the incumbent President of the Republic of Palau Surangel Whipps Jr., chants “Chesols,” a traditional chant of unity and peace, during the inauguration ceremony of the Republic of Palau’s 12th Constitutional Government at Ngerulmud, the Palau National Capitol, Jan. 16. U.S. Army Col. Alejandro Buniag, chief of staff of Joint Task Force - Micronesia, and other U.S. military leaders from across the Pacific attended the ceremony, which underscored U.S. Indo-Pacific Command’s commitment to strengthening partnerships and ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific that is connected, prosperous, secure, and resilient. Under the Compact of Free Association (COFA), the United States has full authority and responsibility for defense and security matters in and relating to Palau.
