A sand table is displayed inside an Expeditionary Field Kitchen during a competition for the Maj. Gen. William Pendleton Thompson (W.P.T.) Hill Award at Camp Kinser, Okinawa, Japan, Feb. 13, 2025. The W.P.T. Hill Award, established in 1985, recognizes Marine Corps mess operations that are outstanding in the preparation and service of food, customer service, and management. Competitors are judged on areas such as kitchen operations, sanitation, and taste and quality of food. A sand table is used as a scale model of terrain for training and wargaming purposes.
