U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Nickolas Whitefield, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade fires and effects coordinator, presents Maj. Gen. Hisashi Ito, commanding general of the 2nd Artillery Brigade, Western Army, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force a gift during the Exercise Yama Sakura 87 awards ceremony in Kumamoto, Japan Dec. 14, 2024. Yama Sakura 87 is the largest and most complex U.S. Army-Japan Ground Self-Defense Force command post exercise to date, with enhanced participation of the Australian Defense Force and U.S. Marines with III Marine Expeditionary Force. The goal of the exercise is to strengthen multi-domain and cross-domain interoperability and readiness between the U.S.-Japan alliance to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.
