Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Lieutenant General Masayoshi Arai, commanding general of the Western Army, and U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Rodger B. Turner, commanding general of III Marine Expeditionary Force, brief during a trilateral synchronization meeting with Western Army and Australian counterparts during Exercise Yama Sakura 87 in Kumamoto, Japan Dec. 12, 2024. Yama Sakura 87 is the largest and most complex U.S. Army-Japan Ground Self-Defense Force command post exercise to date, with enhanced participation of the Australian Defense Force and U.S. Marines with III MEF. The goal of the exercise is to strengthen multi-domain and cross-domain interoperability and readiness between the U.S.-Japan alliance to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.
