U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Karisma Taylor, 6th Security Forces Squadron defender, poses for a portrait March 21, 2025, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. What started out as a 12-hour shift turned into a 22-hour day when Taylor and three of her fellow Airmen received a last-minute notification to provide overwatch security for fifth-generation fighter aircraft off the installation. Her team partnered with U.S. Army Black Hawk pilots, who enabled the transportation of several Defenders over to the site, and Tyndall AFB security forces members who augmented security for the aircraft. Defenders are the service security and police forces that conduct 24/7 operations to protect personnel and critical national defense resources. They represent the largest career field in the Air Force with more than 38,000 members and provide installation security efforts at home stations and overseas, including in hostile theater locations. As the service’s law enforcement body, SF is primarily responsible for securing resources that provide strategic airpower and protect assets vital to US interests worldwide.
