Dr. Renee Serra and Dr. Douglas Ruhl’s suction tool can be fitted to existing surgical tools to help protect nose and throat surgeons, anesthetists, and dentists from harmful contaminants escaping from the patient’s airway and oral cavity. Here, the suction tool is shown attached to a left-sided curved tongue retractor. The Medical Research and Development Command’s Office of Medical Technology Transfer is working with Serra and Ruhl to develop and de-risk the device for licensing by small businesses operating in the medical device space.
