During the St. Louis District consolidated closure, the 1200-foot lock chamber at Locks and Dam 27 was dewatered allowing for embedded metal removal, concrete resurfacing and replacement. Lock and Dam 27, located in Granite City, Illinois moves more cargo than any other navigation structure on the Mississippi River. This structure is situated near the southern end of the 8.4-mile long, man-made Chain of Rocks Canal and is the southernmost lock on the Mississippi River, giving barges access to the free-flowing river all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.
