The Soldiers traveled to Italy to participate in the Col. William O. Darby 40-Miler Ranger Challenge, which honors Darby and 25 Soldiers from 10th Mountain Division who died near Lake Garda during World War II on April 30, 1945. Darby was killed by enemy artillery just hours before 25 of his Soldiers lost their lives when their DUKW (Army amphibious vehicle) sank while crossing the lake. (U.S. Army photo by Pfc.
