St. John Nepomucene Church, in Pilsen, Kan., was Capt. Emil Kapaun's home parish before and after service in World War II as a U.S. Army chaplain. The church is 98 years old,and virtually unchanged since Kapaun celebrated his first mass as an ordained priest at this altar in 1940. It would be his last parish before his service during the Korean War, where he would risk life, limb and capture to save others. Kapaun died in a prisoner of war camp in North Korea in 1951.
