Retired Army Maj. Gen. James Mukoyama, speaks to the soldiers and civilians of the 85th Support Command, based out of Chicago, during the unit’s Asian American/Pacific Islander observance held at the unit’s headquarters on May 4. Mukoyama spoke about the contributions that Asian Americans have given to this country, specifically, those of the first-, second-, and third-generation Japanese people to this nation. He was a member of the 85th Support Command -formerly known as the 85th Training Division- for 18 years, he also was the first Asian American to command an Army Division; he received his first star at the age of 43, and received his second star three years later.
After 30 years of service, retiring in May 1995, his decorations and badges included: The Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, three Bronze Stars, Purple Heart, Parachutist Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge and Combat Infantryman’s Badge.
