Attendees of the 20th Anniversary commemoration event fo the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies listen to retired Army Gen. Carter F. Ham talk about the center's work in a video presentation June 12. The video was part of a slate of activities put on by the center to celebrate the anniversary. The event drew 400 people and filled the center's two largest meeting halls. It includes German and American speakers, including a former director of the center and the mayor of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Thomas Schmid. The DOD launched the Marshall Center June 5, 1993. Since that time, it has met engaged about 50,000 people and has an alumni network of better than 10,000 people in 141 countries. The mission of the Marshall Center is to create a more stable security environment by advancing democratic institutions and relationships, especially in the field of defense; promoting active, peaceful security cooperation; and enhancing enduring partnerships among the nations of North America, Europe and Eurasia.
