A 1/8th scale wooden model of the Gilliam-class amphibious assault transport ship USS Gilliam (APA 57), built by Seattle resident Harry Whitcutt and donated to Naval Station Everett (NSE) in 2004 by his son, Gary, sits in the lobby of Building 2000 on NSE in Everett, Wash. Gilliam, commissioned in 1944, was used to transport soldiers and Marines in WWII before being sunk as a part of an atomic bomb test at Bikini Atoll during Operation Crossroads in 1946. The model was built over a period of three years and uses no pre-made products or molds. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Kyle Steckler/Released)
