Less than a year old, Soklay Kong (left) and her older sister, Pauline, sit on a makeshift bench at a U.N. refugee camp in Thailand, 1980. A year earlier, Kong's parents fled their home in Cambodia to escape persecution from the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia's former ruling communist party that interrogated, tortured and killed tens of thousands of its own citizens. Kong's uncle was among the victims (photo courtesy of Sokhem and Lena Kong).
