Shortly after escaping persecution from Cambodia's genocidal regime, Sokhem supported his family by teaching Khmer—Cambodia's official language—at a U.N. refugee camp in Thailand. However, it was his fluency in French and English that ultimately gave his family access to the people that would help them emigrate to America (photo courtesy of Sokhem and Lena Kong).
