Rct. George Schnurr, 18, Platoon 2078, Hotel Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, uses his rifle to block during martial arts training July 15, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Martial arts instructors taught recruits various techniques to help defend themselves with their rifles in close-quarters combat. The Marine Corps Martial Arts Program contributes to the physical, mental and character growth of Marines. Recruits must earn tan belts, the first level of MCMAP, in order to graduate. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of for females in the Marine Corps.
