Weapons and Field Training Battalion instructors secure recruits' harnesses before climbing up the rappel tower June 11, 2013, on Parris Island. The instructors ensure harnesses are tied correctly before recruits rappel. Rappel training helps prepare recruits for deployment from helicopters, navigating difficult terrain and gaining access to buildings during raids. The training also helps instill confidence and courage in recruits by overcoming a fear of heights. Fox Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 2, 2013. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. David Bessey)
