Staff Sgt. Ty Michael Carter, currently serving as a staff noncommissioned officer in Headquarters Support Company, 7th Infantry Division, addresses the public for the first time regarding his recent nomination for the Medal of Honor, July 29. Carter and his wife, Shannon, engaged nearly 20 media sources at the one-hour event held on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Carter will receive the Medal of Honor next month for his conspicuous gallantry in Afghanistan while serving with Troop B, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment. On Oct. 3, 2009, many soldiers distinguished themselves when more than 400 anti-Afghan forces attempted to overrun Combat Outpost Keating, Afghanistan. Of the 54 members who defended the position, eight soldiers were killed, and more than 25 were injured. Without regard to his own safety, Spc. Ty Michael Carter proved himself time and time again, risking his life while engaging in combat against the enemies of the United States.
