MINA SALMAN PIER, Bahrain – U.S. Navy and civilian personnel and equipment assigned to Commander, Navy Region Southwest Asia joined Commander, Task Force 59 and coalition partners Nov. 6 for a mock oil spill cleanup demonstration in the waters of Mina Salman port.
The demonstration was the culmination of a week-long humanitarian assistance and disaster relief exercise led by CTF 59, which is responsible for planning and carrying out contingency operations in the region.
CNRSWA Environmental Director, Awni Almasri, who has conducted several of these recovery exercises throughout Region Southwest Asia as well as at Naval Support Activity Bahrain, said his environmental team has the capability to cleanup oil spills in the water and on land.
However, the HA/DR exercise scenario involved cleaning up an oil spill from an at-sea oil tanker damaged by a notional tropical cyclone.
"The goal of this exercise was to validate local resources as well as train and practice the deployment of our equipment and cleanup specialists," Almasri explained.
During the exercise, SEACOR International, Inc., an environmental cleanup contractor for the U.S. Navy, provided skimmers and collection bladders used to recover the oil, and inflatable booms used to control the spread of contamination.
U.S. Navy Cmdr. Daniel Henderson, CTF 59's oil spill response and material officer, said the overall goal of the HA/DR exercise was to enhance the crisis response team's capabilities to answer any regional nation's request for assistance during a time of crisis.
"The HA/DR scenario was challenging, and we designed it that way so we can test our personnel, equipment and collective capabilities," Henderson said. "Should a real-world request for assistance come our way, we can respond quickly and effectively because we've trained for it through exercises like this layered and complex scenario."
