MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Members of Reserve Officers' Training Corps participated in Marine Week for Career Orientation and Training for Midshipmen, aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River Aug. 4 through 8.
It was an opportunity for the future Marine Corps and Navy officers to gain exposure to military life and to the troops they may one day lead.
“It’s been an eye-opening experience,” said 3rd Class Midshipmen Richard Jean Baptiste, a Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University student from West Palm Beach, Florida.
Marine Week was the midshipmen’s fourth and final week of CORTRAMID. Before Marine Week, the midshipmen explored various aspects of the Navy such as aviation, surface warfare and submarines.
“It’s a jam packed week,” said 1st Lt. Ashley Brown, the commander of CORTRAMID’s 3rd Platoon.
Brown, and other Marine leaders from local units and ROTC units led the troops of midshipmen during Marine Week.
Aboard the local installations, the students experienced a live fire exercise, pugil stick bouts, a flight simulator, Military Operations on Urban Terrain training and the gas chamber, among other events and challenges.
“CORTRAMID is very important,” said 1st Lt. Christine Calderon, the commander of CORTRAMID’s 2nd Platoon.
The training provides a challenge to the youth who may have never been tested before and may not understand the difficulties associated with military service, added the native of Diamond Bar, California.
CORTRAMID provides the midshipmen with a general understanding of what Marines and sailors do, said Brown, a native of Huntley, Illinois.
“They get a good feel for what we’re all about,” said Col. Jonathan Hitesman, the commanding officer of CORTRAMID’s Marine Week.
The information allows the students to make decisions about what they can do when they enter the operating forces, added Hitesman, a native of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
“It’s a great experience,” said Hitesman. “For most of them it’s the highlight of their summer.”
Marine Week gave 3rd Class Midshipmen Jessica Glickman a chance to do things she never thought she would have the opportunity to do.
“I had fun doing it all,” said Glickman, a native of Middletown, New York.
