KOLEJ TENTERA DARAT, Malaysia – After 10 days of training, Malaysian Armed Forces service members and Marines from 3rd Law Enforcement are getting ready to finish their last mission of Non-lethal Weapons Executive Seminar 2015, the final demonstration.

Marines came to Malaysia to train in non-lethal tactics as part of NOLES 2015, an exercise scheduled from Sept. 7-18, with the field training portion ending on Sept. 16. NOLES is the U.S. Pacific’s Command premiere multilateral theater security cooperation exercise for non-lethal tactics. This year will be the 14th iteration of NOLES, an exercise that is held in a different nation annually and is hosted by U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific.

“The Marines did outstanding, coming down to [Malaysia] and being able to train them in non-lethal tactics,” said Sgt. Maj. Luis Hernandez, 3rd Law Enforcement Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force. “Being able to actually execute the formations and scenarios is indicative of how the Marines trained them.”

Throughout the exercise, training consisted of instruction in Mechanical Advantage Controlling Techniques (MACH), use of the X-26 Taser, Oleoresin Capsicum training, non-lethal munitions live-firing, and crowd control formations. On training day three, the MAF service members got a day to instruct the Marines in their own techniques as well. Non-lethal weapons and tactics provide options for Marines and partner nation militaries to have the ability to operate in the full spectrum of warfare.

“This bridges that gap between being able to do nothing, and lethal force,” said Lt. Col. Bernard Hess, commanding officer, 3rd LE BN., III MEF. “It gives you options, that’s the main thing.”

The Marines from Okinawa are getting ready to head home, and they have expressed their gratitude to their host.

“From what I’ve seen and heard from my Marines, this is the best event we’ve been a part of,” Hess said.

The last two days of the seminar will consist of briefs, scenarios for the use of NLWs, as well as strategies for engaging media. As the seminar now gets closer to the end, one Marine has a few last words for the MAF.

“My hat is off to the Malaysian Armed Forces, for being such generous hosts and taking care of the Marines, and providing us the opportunity to come here,” Hess said.
