Rear Adm. Gayle D. Shaffer, Director, Health Services, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps/Medical Officer of the Marine Corps/Chief, Navy Dental Corps, along with dental corps chiefs and officers from the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force toured various sites in the Pacific Northwest including Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) on Feb. 27, 2018.

Capt. Jeffrey Bitterman, NHB commanding officer, hosted the visitors by showcasing Branch Health Clinic Bangor dental staff and clinic, along with NHB's Main Pharmacy, Family Medicine and Oral Surgery departments.

According to NHB Senior Dental Executive, Lt. Cmdr. Sarah Lawson, the man focus of the visit was the deployment of the Department of Defense new electronic health record(s), MHS GENESIS, and Dentrix (Enterprise). Dentrix is a modified commercial system designed to streamline and standardize workflows for military dental departments.

“Rear Adm. Shaffer visited here to find out first-hand how the new dental system is affecting the delivery of care. She wanted to understand the type of work being done at the deck plate by adapting the commercial product to the unique needs of the military that are not seen in the civilian world, (such as) readiness tracking and reporting, special duty status patients, and a continual turnover of providers, support staff and patients between clinics and operational platforms,” said Lawson.

Lawson also noted that Shaffer expressed appreciation for the teamwork of NHB’s Dental Department staff in meeting the challenges of being the vanguard of the new system, and directly addressed any concerns or questions from the dental personnel. “I’m here to support in any way that I can,” Shaffer stated.

The Dental Corps primary responsibility is to maintain high operational (dental) readiness for the Navy and Marine Corps, as well as train for all contingencies. There are approximately 1,400 active duty and reserve dentists with 15 specialties such as operative dentistry, orthodontics, and comprehensive dentistry.
