Col. Jeffrey T. Schreiner assumed command of the 509th Bomb Wing from Brig. Gen. John J. Nichols during a change of command ceremony on May 9, 2019, at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri.
Maj. Gen. James C. Dawkins Jr., the 8th Air Force commander from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, served as the presiding official for the ceremony.
Dawkins told the event’s attendees, which included Airmen, civic leaders and community partners, that the decision to award command of the 509th Bomb Wing to Schreiner was not made lightly, and bestowed upon Schreiner because of his outstanding record as a leader.
“Today we entrust the 509th Bomb Wing and its mission and its men and women to you,” Dawkins said to Schreiner. “Good luck.”
Schreiner, an Independence, Missouri native, is returning to Whiteman AFB after serving as the Battle Watch commander in the Global Operations Center of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.
“My Missouri roots run deep,” said Schreiner. Now serving as commander of the 509th Bomb Wing marks his third stint at Whiteman AFB.
Schreiner is a B-2 pilot and also has flight hours in the B-52 and trainer jets, including the T-38. Additionally, Schreiner was an instructor and an evaluator pilot in both the B-2 and T-38. He was also the commander of Whiteman’s 13th Bomb Squadron.
“I’m excited and humbled to have the opportunity to lead the 509th and look forward to watching all our amazing Airmen provide America with its most-lethal combat air power,” Schreiner said during the change of command ceremony.
Schreiner emphasized his new installation’s crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of the United States.
“The mission of the 509th is critical to our national security strategy, providing both nuclear deterrence and the world’s most deadly conventional platform,” Schreiner said. “Together with our mission partners, Whiteman Air Force Base represents the entire spectrum of military power.”
Nichols, who will now serve as the deputy director of Global Operations of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, gave his farewell to Whiteman AFB and wished Schreiner luck.
“I’ve had the honor and privilege of leading the 509th Bomb Wing for the past two years,” Nichols said, “and it has been the highlight of my career.”
Nichols also thanked the Airmen of Whiteman AFB.
“You are what makes Whiteman successful,” said Nichols. “All I can say is, ‘thank you.’
