The clean-up was held in preparation for the following week’s event June 22, where an estimated 7,000 cup candles will be lit and placed to commemorate the victims of the Battle of Okinawa during World War II.

The Peace Memorial Park tells the story of the Battle of Okinawa and the islands reconstruction along with the Peace Memorial Museum and other memorials to include the “Cornerstone of Peace”, located within the park.

The Mad Foxes were able to learn about the history shown through the memorial while helping rake, sweep and gather debris left by the seasonal rain.

“We want to learn the culture as well as help the environment, especially because of the typhoon season and the debris it’s been leaving with the rain,” said Aviation Machinist Mate 1st Class, Rustam T. Yapparov. “We also want to learn about the history because this park was dedicated to the victims during World War II”.

The Chiefs Mess and First Class Petty Officer Association (FCPOA) used this opportunity to interact outside of work and further strengthen their bond in VP-5 as well as contribute to the local community.

“Although Chiefs and Petty Officer First Class’ work hand-in-hand during the working hours, we thought it would be a good idea to work together and socialize outside in a different environment,” said Aviation Structural Mechanic 1st Class, Harrison Zamudio.

VP-5 will continue their volunteering next weekend, June 22, when they will also participate in a ceremony dedicated to the victims of the Battle of Okinawa.

The “Mad Foxes” of VP-5, who are based out of Jacksonville, Florida, are currently deployed to Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan. Throughout the deployment, they will be conducting maritime patrol and reconnaissance and theater outreach operations within the 7th Fleet area of operations in support of Commander, Task Force 72, C7F and U.S. Pacific Command objectives throughout the Indo-Asia Pacific region.
