AL ASAD, Iraq - An elite group of Iraq's soldiers stands ready to spring into action against terrorism and insurgency in Iraq.
Al Anbar's 9th Battalion, Iraqi Special Operations Forces soldiers have one mission; to keep the people of Iraq safe.
To stay prepared for this mission, 9th Battalion soldiers spend their days training and working with U.S. Special Operations Forces advisors with the goal of increasing their ability to protect the Iraqi people.
Al Anbar's ISOF battalion is one of many throughout Iraq ready to combat insurgents and terrorists.
"Iraq is so spread out you can't control it from one location," said a 9th Battalion lieutenant. "Each province has teams to execute high value missions."
These missions can range from presence patrols to fast-roping during pitch-black night to capture a suspected terrorist anywhere in Al Anbar.
Though many dangerous missions may come their way, the 9th Bn. soldiers are aware of the risks and are willing to protect their country.
"[The soldiers] know the dangers of the job," said a 9th Bn. lieutenant. "But they trust themselves, their weapons and each other."
This ability to face danger may be what the country needs to battle those who would try to stand in the way of peace in Iraq.
"There are some high-value targets [out there]," said the lieutenant. "And we are the medicine to cure that problem."
