Lt. Gen. R. Scott Dingle, the U.S. Army Surgeon General and commanding general U.S. Army Medical Command visited the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center and its facilities for an overview of operations provided to support the III Corps and Fort Hood Readiness efforts 21 July.
Dingle met with Col. Daniel J. Moore, CRDAMC commander, toured the main facility and some of its clinics where he received briefings from leaders on efforts to enable the readiness of Fort Hood Soldiers, and awarded staff members for exceptional performance.
After visiting the main facility, the Fort Hood Soldier Recovery Unit was Dingle’s next stop.
Lt. Col. Joseph Black, SRU commander, provided Dingle with an overview of how the center is helping Soldiers recover and get back to service or transition out of the Army. Black noted that the unit has had very positive feedback from command climate surveys and that Soldiers have commented that they feel connected to battle buddies and have a great sense of belonging in the unit.
Dingle noted that when the Army started the SRUs, the task between the combat arms and army medical personnel was to bring a specific leadership to the hospital to provide that connection with Soldiers and that the Fort Hood SRU has met and exceeded that task.
Dingle got an interesting highlight during his tour of the Intrepid Spirit Center. He found out that Soldiers participate in a culinary competition similar to the famous chopped show.
Dr. Scott Engle, ISC director, described the competition as engaging and realistic and that it even has the three VIP judges.
“It’s a competition where they make recipes, work together and find fun ways to engage in rehab,” said Engle. “It makes treatment and rehab a lot of fun, allows for a greater engagement and might be the best little secret that we have here at Fort Hood.”
Dingle awarded several recipients his commander’s coin. At the ISC, the awardee was Sgt. Isabella Nelson, ISC non-commissioned officer in-charge. Among many different tasks, as the unit retention NCO Nelson reenlisted 200% of fiscal years 2020 mission and has reached 45% of the CRDAMC fiscal year 2021 mission.
“Thank you for allowing Soldiers to live their dreams, tell their stories and for giving them the opportunity to continue their service,” said Dingle. “Thank you for your example – you’re doing so much – continue to be contagious, because you’re the reason Army Medicine is Army Strong.”
