FORT CARSON, Colo. – Two U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program Soldier-athletes qualified for the USA Taekwondo World Championship Team during competition events recently. Spc. Joshua Liu (Men’s -74kg light weight) and Pfc. Khalfani Harris (Men's -68kg feather weight) both met the requirements necessary to be selected to the team.
Liu, a native of Ashburn, Virginia, completed his selection requirements by winning the Mexico Open held in June, and Taekwondo National Championships held in August as well as having met the ranking points requirement.
Harris, a native of Tampa, Florida, claimed his last required major win at the Senior Grand Slam event, held at the USA Taekwondo National Center of Excellence, Colorado Springs, Colorado on December 3, 2021. The Senior Grand Slam is one of three ‘major’ events that count towards selection to the team, accompanied by the National Championships and Grand Prix Final. Harris won by referee’s punitive action for accumulating ten penalties against his opponents in both the semi-finals and quarter-finals. Harris defeated his opponent by point gap in the finals 41-3.
“I’m proud of myself for making the world championships team,” said Harris. “A lot of people doubted my ability but I continued to prove everyone wrong by focusing on my training and pushing past my limits.”
Both Soldier-athletes will look for a fourth major win at the postponed 2021 Grand Prix Final in Palm Beach, Florida, before competing at the postponed 2021 World Taekwondo Championships in Wuxi, China.
