VICENZA, Italy – Maj. Gen. Todd R. Wasmund, commanding general of the U.S. Army’s Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) visited Mauritania Jan. 24-25 to strengthen relationships between the U.S. Army and the Armed Forces of Mauritania.

During the visit, Maj. Gen. Todd Wasmund met with Mauritanian Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. El Mokhtar Bolle Chaabane in Nouakchott to discuss current areas of cooperation and opportunities for additional training exchanges and collaboration.

“Our visit explored opportunities for the U.S. Army and the Mauritanian Army to cooperate in our shared security objectives in West Africa and the Sahel”, said Wasmund.

Mauritania has previously hosted Flintlock in 2020, U.S. Special Operations Command Africa’s largest annual multinational exercise focused on strengthening special operations forces capabilities across the Sahel region.

While visiting the U.S. Embassy in Nouakchott, Wasmund also interacted with a group of Mauritanians, who will study in the United States as part of the Department of State’s Fulbright Exchange Program.
