    USN Military Sealift Command

Norfolk, Va. (Apr. 4, 2025) – Eleven U.S. Navy medical reservists assigned to hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) visited Military Sealift Command’s fleet replenishment oiler USNS Joshua Humphreys (T-AO 188) at Naval Station Norfolk, Apr. 3, for a tour and lunch, offering a unique maritime experience for the entire team.

The medical reservists received a ninety-minute guided tour of USNS Joshua Humphreys, the second of 14 Henry J. Kaiser-class ships, notable for annually providing on-time essential replenishment services to the Navy’s warfighters at sea. The trip included lunch and countless opportunities for the team to engage with the civil service mariners, also known as CIVMARS, assigned to the vessel, about their knowledge and experience aboard this unique class of ship.

This was an eye-opening ship visit, said CDR Diego A. Covarrubias. “We greatly enjoyed our time aboard and now have a true appreciation for the crucial work the crew does to support the operations of the Navy. A big thanks goes to Capt. Christian, Operations Chief Gonzales, and the crew for their hospitality. This was truly an unforgettable day and one that proves that the Navy team is the best team!”

We thoroughly enjoyed hosting this select contingent from USNS Comfort’s reserve force, said Operations Chief Larry J. Gonzales who was instrumental in the planning and execution of the tour event. “This valuable experience provided the group with a firsthand understanding of Replenishment at Sea (RAS) operations, specifically focusing on the logistical processes involved in the vital transfer of medical supplies to other naval vessels at sea. Additionally, the demonstration highlighted the critical role RAS plays in maintaining the readiness and operational capabilities of the fleet. We trust this observation enhanced their appreciation for the complexities of naval logistics and their own contribution to the overall mission.”

As a part of MSC’s Combat Logistics Force vessels oilers are an integral part of the Navy’s logistics system, making it possible for combatant ships to stay forward deployed, protecting America’s interests worldwide. The Combat Logistics Fleet is the backbone of sustained operations at sea and the CIVMARS that man and operate these ships, responsible for resupplying combat ships with fuel, stores, and ammunition, are the most critical piece of that equation.
