VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A historic Change of Command took place at the Harbor Master Facility aboard Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) Little Creek – Fort Story, July 12, when more than 100 guests witnessed Marine Col. Christopher R. McCarthy, Commanding Officer of Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group (MCSCG) relinquish command to Lt. Col. Matt Baker.
This is the first change in command leadership since Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group was established on October 1, 2011.
“This move is similar to a homecoming for my family and I,” said Baker, who is a U.S. Naval Academy graduate. “I met my wife when I previously served in the local area as a Marine Officer Instructor with the Navy ROTC unit in Hampton Roads from 1998 – 2001. “It’s great to be back and be part of a unit with such an important mission.”
Lieutenant Colonel Baker is a highly decorated officer that has accumulated more than 25 years of military service and includes three combat deployments. Most recently, he participated in the Secretary of Defense Corporate Fellowship Program from July 2011 until June 2012. He was assigned to Royal Dutch Shell, Upstream Americas in Houston, Texas.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Colonel McCarthy, who was the commanding officer of MCSCG since June 2010, and his family will continue their Marine Corps journey by transferring to Commander U.S. Sixth Fleet in Naples, Italy where he will assume duties as the Fleet Marine Officer and Future Plans Officer.
“Over the last two years I have had the tremendous privilege of serving as your commanding officer,” said McCarthy to the formation of Marines. “Over this period, I have seen you take the command from a fledging organization of approximately 80 personnel, to its current position as the leading Security Cooperation organization in the Marine Corps and the Department of Defense. Each of you has played a role in this achievement. Thank you for your tireless efforts.”
The Jacksonville, N.C. native and Old Dominion University alum continued, “I am convinced the future for the Marine Corps rests in large part on professional Security Cooperation planning, training, integration, and execution: you are the command that will lead the Corps into the future.“
Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group is the Marine Corps’ premier security cooperation unit. MCSCG coordinates, manages, executes and evaluates U.S. Marine Corps’ Security Cooperation programs and activities. Some of the unit’s lines of effort include assessments, planning , military related education and training, and advisory support to ensure unity of effort in building partner nation security force capacity.
