PHILIPPINE SEA – The amphibious dock landing ship USS Tortuga (LSD 46) began their 2012 Navy College Program for Afloat College Education (NCPACE) while on deployment in the Western Pacific Oct. 4.

A civilian instructor was provided by NCPACE and brought aboard to give sailors an opportunity to take college classes for seven weeks during deployment.

“My role is to instruct the sailors while they’re out to sea,” said Victoria Brown, the NCPACE instructor. “They can earn college credits and it gives them a little more knowledge in case they want to continue their education.”

Sailors enrolled through the ship’s Educational Service Officer (ESO), Chief Personnel Specialist Julz Alba, two months prior to beginning classes. Once sailors were registered they were given a course schedule and a list of textbooks or items they would need to purchase.

“The good thing about this program is that sailors receive college credit for free because the Navy waves any possible tuition fees,” said Alba. “Any related materials and textbooks are the only things that sailors have to pay for.”

NCPACE allows sailors to attend basic level courses for college credit and to begin or complete a degree. Sailors can go online to find courses that they feel would be beneficial and request the course for their ship through their ESO.

“This course is a really good opportunity for sailors like myself and it’s also a good break in sea routine,” said Airman Luis Silva, a Sailor who is enrolled in NCPACE.

Tortuga is part of the only forward-deployed Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and is currently operating in the 7th Fleet Area of Responsibility.
