FORT HOOD, Texas - A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to signify the opening of Fort Hood Stadium complex, here Oct. 19.
The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, civilian media and senior-ranking officials, including Brig. Gen. James Richardson, deputy commanding general, III Corps and Fort Hood.
“I really want to thank all of you for attending today’s ceremony as we formally open one of the newest, and soon to be one of the best, facilities on Fort Hood, Texas,” Richardson stated.
During his speech to the Fort Hood Family, Richardson took the time to thank the individuals and assemblages who worked hard to make the Hood Stadium dream a reality. It was a group project, he said.
“This project represents a true team effort,” said Richardson. “I’d like to extend a special recognition to Mr. Richard Alexander, the hospital construction office manager, the corps of engineers, and our stadium team. The team worked to design and build the beautiful stadium you see before you, which will benefit not only the Soldiers, but Fort Hood Family members and our Central Texas community.”
The need for the new stadium presented itself due to other projects on Fort Hood, said Capt. Cassidy Eaves, operations officer, Fort Hood Hospital Construction Office and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
“This [the new stadium] is part of the Hospital Construction Program,” Eaves stated. “We had to tear down the old stadium because that’s where the new hospital is being built.”
Due to the demolition of the old stadium, nearly $14 million was invested for the new complex. The money was dispersed for a bevy of amenities, said Richardson.
“This new stadium complex includes a dual-use football and soccer field, an eight-lane running track, two locker rooms, two concession stands, two restroom facilities, a maintenance facility, a press box and 5,500 seats, as well as parking for over 1,000 vehicles,” said Richardson.
Despite the ribbon cutting, there is still work left to be done; Richardson said he is looking forward to the end date.
“We look forward to the completion of this project, which will provide the continued support for major events, such as Freedom Fest, Month of the Military Child Celebration, Earth Fest, and outdoor concerts and celebrations,” stated Richardson.
In addition to military-related events, the stadium will also be used to support the local sports programs, stated Richardson.
“The new stadium will also be the host site for the Killeen Independent School District high school football games, including the big game tonight between the Harker Heights Knights and Shoemaker Grey Wolves,” the general said.
As the end of his speech approached, Richardson offered thanks to the community for supporting the project and wished the football game’s participants well.
“I want to thank all of you for attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony,” said Richardson. “I wish all the teams the best of luck as they compete on the field of dreams at our new stadium.”
The opening of Hood Stadium is another example of Fort Hood leaders strengthening the Army Family and bringing the community together.
