Artillerymen prepare an M777A2 155 mm lightweight howitzer for direct fire at the Rodriguez Live-Fire Complex Aug. 21 during Korean Marine Exchange Program 13-8. For artillerymen, direct fire is used when the target has come within 2000 meters of the battery’s location. Direct firing the howitzer does not require coordinates to plot and engage, but relies on the accuracy of the artilleryman using the gun’s sights. The artillerymen are with Battery I, 3rd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, currently assigned to 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force under the unit deployment program.
